For the real 18th century thing!
« on: August 12, 2010, 10:35:01 pm »
Hello!

This time I collected all of my British soldiers and tried to reconstruct a authentic battalion in line formation!

Usually, back then, a British battalion consisted of 10 companies of 100 men, including one grenadier company and one company of light infantry (Duncas' manual: Principles of Military Movements, 1788).

Depicted below is what I could come up with:

A company = 18 soldiers, 2 sergeants, 2 officers (captain & Lieutenant)

On the left: a Grenadier company
Then: 2 companies of regulars
Then: the colour-party (5 sergeants, 2 ensigns & an officer)
then: 2 companies of regulars & a company of light infantry

The colonel rides up front, the Lieutenant-colonel behind the colour-party & behind the drummers / musicians, the Staff officers.

That's a nice regiment, Marco.  Thanks for sharing it with us! :)  Some close up pictures would be welcome too.

Hi Marco,

Very nice pictures! Like Richard (and others), I would love to see some close-ups of your troops, especially the highlanders and grenadiers. But the sight of the whole regiment turned out in full battle order is quite impressive!

A question: would the light infantry company perhaps have been deployed in front of the regimental line, in open, 'skirmishing' order? Or was doing that an innovation of the early 19th century?

Cheers,

AndrewL
