I left my love a letter in the hollar of a tree.
I told her she would find me in the U.S. Cavalry.

These are great Cheng!

Hey, if you ever take a trip to Beijing, check out the military museum.  The top floor is dedicated to ancient-to-Qing era models and displays.  It features a life-size chariot reproduction (which I remember thinking there was something wrong about with respect to the hitch, but it looked good).

Are your tunics actually paper glued around the klicky?  The tunics look really good, like factory made.  Maybe it's the paint you use?  I've had really bad lucky getting paint to look good.  My spray comes out splotchy (maybe I just need more practice).

The decals on the chest are the best.  Did you do those with a brush?

Qing uniforms with their unit insignia on the chest are something that Playmobil designers ought to really go for.

There's talk on other forums about an expected Japanese or Chinese Playmobil theme, but most of the talk is pretty dismal--samurais and ninjas.  I wonder what the odds of Playmobil giving us Bannermen, Boxers, and the Muslem division from Shanxi Province?   :D :D :D :D :D

Dont know if i'll ever be able to visit Beijing.
i dont allow myself to use paper nor glue...so its sticky PVC sheets or held on by some klicky parts so its not good for playing but i can wash them under the tap :)

blotches form your spray can can be due to either cheap paints or dirty nozzle...no matter how you press...they'll come out in blobs here and there...you'll have to throw them away.

oh no..no free-hand painting on my klickies...they were preprinted stickers on silver sticky foils

but any new customisable asian parts will be most welcome! you have any 'asian' pictures you wish me to try to custom?

Hi Cheng

Thanks for the response and for the tips.  It sounds like I need to invest in higher grade spray paint.

Here is a Monkey King and Scripture Pilgrim I did last year.

A real challenge, which I attempted but failed at, is the monkey king as depicted in opera costume--because it would involve painting the face.

Except for the mask, I couldn't find any good photos, but you probably have seen him.

A Yamabushi, on the other hand is probably easier (and fits better into the Garden Wargaming theme!), but you may have even done one.

I need to get off my seat and improve my abilities, so tips on how you would go about it are just as useful.

Oh, Tim !
those 2 'monkey king' folklore characters you made are brilliant!!

the monkey king's head is more often depicted without those opera-style face painting and your use of side burns really made up for the hair-circle around his eyes....very smart indeed !!!

have you ever tried snapping on a PM monkey's head before? (i dont know if its the right size since i dont have one) and for the head ring, perhaps the new egyptian 'cobra' ring might be the nearest PM part avaiable :)

and as for the monk....wow!!! i have that gold 'Inca' crown too..i did visualise exactly what you did but I try not to do themes not connected to uniforms/wars....may I challenge you to think about customising the monk's 'weapon' (you know, the gold 'clobbering' thingy)  ;D

Keep going, Tim...I look at my shelves and very now and then when a better idea or part is available, I will 'improve' it...Its hard to explain to others but we customisers understand, dont we  :D

how come you never showed us this custom of yours? I think we can share and improve our customs if we work together like this :)
(anymore hidden in your closet?  ;D )

ps. for the monk, would you rather try orange-coloured arms from those construction men? ..i know, now orange toga (yet  ;D )
and PM doesnt have a good bald head for asians yet...and I'm waiting for 'japanese' slippers hopefully in 2009 and I might 'explode' with some samurai armies (Yamabushi? No, never heard of them but I know 'Yama' means mountain :P )

Hi Cheng
Thanks for the comments!

The orange arms from the construction workers sounds good.  I'll order a guy next time and see how it looks.  I also tried the scripture pilgrim without his hair (with the hat resting on the bare headpiece).  It actually looks better (bald monk)--but of course the hat is loose.  Guess I could use gummy putty to make the hat stick in place

I considered the chimpanzee head for monkey king.  It would be a little disproportionate.  Something different: take a spider monkey (with the curly tail) and fit a girdle around it and put a child's crown on its head.

Thanks again for the comments and suggestions.  Your Asian themed customs are the best.  I still remember your Seven Samurai.  Do you have a website?

PS.  Yamabushi = "mountain warrior" (same "bushi" as in bushido).  The sohei (warrior monks) lived up in the mountains and picked up Yamabushi as a nickname.

I'm interested in trying to do a ghost--though as you're saying, not really the theme for Gardenwargaming.  A Chinese vampire, as in that Hong Kong movie "Mr. Vampire", would be amusing.

I think they are great.  Love to see a Japanese warrior monk.
