question and info for acw and western theme lovers
« on: October 01, 2006, 02:16:16 PM »
hi there! it has been a while since i was able to work on some of my customs... finally i have found some time over the weekend and plan to work more during the next days (we have a national holiday in germany on tuesday, so that will give me some more time aswell ;))
anyhow i am working on a western town and right now specifically a cavalry outfit during the 1870's...
i found a great site on the net sometime ago but it has vanished unfortunately. a man named Rod Ploessl made this site with the entire history of us (and cs) rank insignias (revolutionary war - present) - very well done illustriations.
now my question is: i believe the army used chevrons during the indian wars different to those used during the civil war. yet seeing old films (fort apache, she wore a yellow ribbon, rio grande - which all take place during the 1870's if im not mistaken) the chevrons appear exactly as they do during the civil war. is this because ford might have not known, or did not care? (hard to believe really) or did the new chevrons not appeal to the soldiers, or only gradually came into use?

for further info on the acw... (and with Richard's permission) i would like to post the link to a civil war discussion and info page...
http://civilwartalk.com u can also find some illustrations (only the acw ones though) there. (Richard pls feel free to edit my post if any links or pictures posted do not concur with the forum rules!)

ty everyone for any answers, ideas, suggestions :D

Regards,

Flash

ps. here r some pictures... the first and second row show the acw cavalry chevrons, the third the indian war cavalry chevorns (according to Rod Ploessl):

I left my love a letter in the hollar of a tree.
I told her she would find me in the U.S. Cavalry.
High, yo, down they go, there's no such word as can't.
We'll ride clean down to hell and back for Ulysses Simpson Grant.

Hello, Flash ...

The American Civil War occurred during the time of the Indian Wars.

The Indian Wars of the American West began before the American Civil War and didn't end until after the American Civil War.

During this period there was a variety of actual uniforms that seemed to differ from the "regulations." Some of the differences were no doubt caused by lack of supplies, but some were probably the result of individual preferences by both the men and officers.

I have attached some historically accurate pictures from the Company of Military Historians. Each picture is the result of painstaking research by the author/artist and the scrutiny of a panel of military experts.

As you can see, the choice is really yours. Both the straight and flared chevrons are correct. And, it seems that it was well after the Spanish American War before the chevrons were flipped to point up (although there's a picture of a US Marine that challenges that) ... ;)

Do you now see why I keep saying that this is Playmobil ... Have fun and don't take the accuracy too seriously (because it can drive you nuts) ...  ::)

All the best,
Richard

Hello Richard!
Thanx so much for your (fast!) info and pictures!
tbh I havent seen any film with the "bent" chevrons... but again that doesnt mean much... as I said I'm working on some 1870's cavalrymen and I think I will stick with the "straight" chevrons... they somehow look better on the figures ;) Your absolutely right about the fun part Richard... I just get caught up in accuracy a lot! lol...
however your point is very true... I will present you (and the whole forum of course) with my creations within the next few days... so watch this space  ;D
thanx again!

Regards
