Needing help.
« on: August 31, 2009, 04:47:35 AM »
I have an older set, 374Ø Royal Schooner, with no sails. I asked for replacements, but they said they don’t even make them anymore.
I am aware that the newer pirate/corsair ships have “compatible” sails, but they look like they’ve been through a typhoon- Hardly what a ‘proper’ royal schooner, I would think, would look like (although I did plan, possibly, to stitch in patching).
¿Is there anything anyone can do to help me here?

Hi Andy,

I made some decent sails with a paper product I found
in an art supply store.  I think it is a poster board of some
sort.

I used the shot up sail as a pattern and punched the
sail attaching holes out with a leather punch.

It looks fine and holds a nice "billow" as well.

Happy sailing,
Jimbo

Poster board? Is that all? Sounds too simple to be true...
How does it hold up to geting wet? (I assume well enough if you're passing the idea along, but I shouldask anyways.)

You might consider to use the sails of 3940. But you might have to exchange the yards of the aft mast, too.

All with unaltered standard parts. I also had to exchange the fitting for the yards against those of 3940.

Maybe the main sail can be taylored to replace the err... other sail using the original yards.

I have a 394Ø here in a box (oh God, I’m gonna say it) somewhere, so I could try.

I coated mine with a clear flat paint.....but even so I would keep
it out of rough weather.

My boat is high and dry on a coffee table.

Best regards,
Jimbo

Three kids, two (7 and 3) with ADHD. Not gonna happen (I’ll be lucky if the younger doesn’t sink her for drill)…
Thanks for the advice (nothing hurts to try)…

Hi Andy,
I also made some sails from nylon for a large radio controled Playmobil
square  rigger.  You need to cut it  with a hot knife , or soldering iron
with a flat blade.

That is plenty waterproof, 'cause the ship floundered in a stiff breeze
and I had to rescue it with a fishing pole!!!  No klickies were
lost in the adventure.

Be carefull with the hot knife!

Ok, great. I’m getting more an more options, so I can try different things and see what works.
I did lose ONE MOB, years ago. After that I lashed everything and everyone down. (Dammit, that was my boatswains mate, too…)
