Bennain's Fort
« on: March 19, 2006, 01:02:35 pm »
Yesterday I've spend a lot of time to build this "small" Fort. Before I started, I need some "Doping" to get inspiration!  :D

I left my love a letter in the hollar of a tree.
I told her she would find me in the U.S. Cavalry.
High, yo, down they go, there's no such word as can't.
We'll ride clean down to hell and back for Ulysses Simpson Grant.

ENVY ENVY !!

hope you dont mind me asking this here Bannain,
i have been checking on ACW...
only the confederates have those red or blue topped caps...

i often am restricted by my own need to be accurate
...so can somebody tell me if i can also give red or blue topped caps to my northerners too?

Yes, Cheng ...

Although the regular Union (Northern) Army did not usually wear red kepis for artillery, yellow kepis for cavalry and blue kepis for infantry like the regular Confederate (Southern) Army, there were some volunteer Union regiments that did.

The Union Army did, however, follow the same rule of red for artillery, yellow for cavalry and blue for infantry as the Confederate Army, but with trouser stripes and rank (chevrons for enlisted and shoulder devices for officers).

The Union Army used more than just red (scarlet), yellow and blue (light blue). Here is a list of the colors used for the different branches of service:
Artillery-scarlet;
Cavalry-yellow;
Engineers-scarlet piped with orange;
Hospital Corps-maroon piped with white;
Infantry-light blue;
Ordnance-black piped with scarlet;
Post QM Sergeant-buff;
Signal Corps-orange piped with white.

Here are some Union "Volunteer" examples:

Battery A (Chicago Light Artillery),
1st Illinois Light Artillery, 1859-1862

Salem Zouaves,
Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, 1861

2nd Regiment,
New Hampshire Volunteer Militia, 1861

Hope that helps, Cheng ...

All the best,
Richard

thanks for such a comprehensive reply, Richard! (Funky once typed a whole lot for me too in playmoboard but i didnt see them in any pictures/drawings)

it will also benefit many of us ACW 'addicts' who are not so well-informed  :P

my initial knowledge from my airfix days was just 'simple' blues vs greys....
....then i found out confederates are more correct with blue trousers
and now northerners with full grey uniforms  :shock:   :roll:   :P   :D

if only you can wear more hats on your avatar  :wink:
