Some more medieval customs
« on: April 03, 2010, 01:38:41 PM »
Dear All,

Here are some more pictures of groups of my customised medieval troops. First off is the leader, bodyguard and standard-bearer of the faction bearing what I refer to as the 'dragon-serpent' emblem. I rather like this blazon myself, but it seems to me that Playmobil seem awfully fond of the colours black and yellow. Makes finding enough of the right parts for making larger bodies of troops that little bit more difficult...

And now, the first of several shots of the footsoldiers: first en masse, then in smaller groups to show the details...

Right, the next lot are the (in)famous pink/magenta barbarians. When these first came out, I (like many others, I'm sure) thought 'what were Playmobil thinking with that colour?'. But somehow, without really meaning to, I acquired rather a lot of these guys. Some of this is probably down to picking up groups of figures from EBay auctions with barbarians in, but some of it was (semi-)deliberate.

Anyway, I think it is actually possible to put together some nice combinations of parts to make interesting-looking figures. And as for that colour... well, I just figure these guys come from a land where the raw materials for pink/purple dye are actually pretty cheap (something that was NOT the case in real world prior to the development of chemical dyes).

So, first off, as usual, the leader and his most trusted followers on horseback, then on foot.

Yet again you've created some excellent customs, Andrew.  I really like them all.  I too have a lot of the purple striped klickies you're using as longbowmen, as it seems every Viking and Barbarian set has at least one of them!  You've put yours to good use here.

I think I may steal your idea of using the scuba diver torso, as I have several of these klickies and up until now had no idea what I would use them for. ;)

Hi Justindo,

Thanks! Glad you like 'em.

RE: the scuba diver -- yes, I don't know why I thought of using that torso, but somehow it seems to work. For me, it only really works when combined with the more recent chainmail collar and hair and a belt. But then it does, in my mind, suggest a row of hooks and eyes or little buckles down the front of a tunic or jupon.

Cheers,

AndrewL
