More Knights
« on: May 12, 2008, 10:34:19 pm »
Some more knights which I hope you like.

First, Ralph Neville Earl of Westmorland.  Notice the fancy Italian helmet and Italian "horse's head" shield - very fashionable!

In "Henry V" Shakespeare has the Earl have a long talk with the King before the Battle of Agincourt.

He'd have to have shouted.  According to Christopher Hibbert's book "Agincourt", during the campaign the Earl of Westmorland was commanding the army left behind to guard the Scottish frontier.

Second that famous German knight Sir Ulrich von Lichtenstien!

If you saw the film "A Knight's Tale" you'll know that:

"He's fast,
he's funny,
he makes me lots of money,
Lichtenstien, Lichtenstien!"

Finally, the greatest knight of them all.......William the Marshall.

He was the son of a poor knight who was born about 5 miles from where I live in a village still called Hampstead Marshall after his family.

After many adventures http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Marshal,_1st_Earl_of_Pembroke he ended up as Regent of England while King Henry III (who became King at the age of 9) was too young to rule.

He's something of a hero of mine, the local boy who really made good!

Hello, Dan ...

I am going to repeat myself ... :)

This is my post from 26 December 2006. Looking at your latest knights, it seems that the following post is even more true in 2008. Richard Courtenay would have no doubt tipped his hat to you. Well done, Dan!

"Your medieval shields are beautiful, Dan!

The splendid paintwork is reminiscent of the old toy soldier master,
Richard Courtenay!

Richard Courtenay's miniature knights are famous throughout the world of toy soldier collectors!

Your figures are truly magnificent, Dan! And, they bring back fond memories of an old master craftsman. Thank you!"

All the best,
Richard

These look good, Dan.

I've read a lot about William Marshal lately and am equally impressed with his rise.

Did you paint or create stickers for the shields?

I painted them.

I stick a piece of thick artist's "watercolour paper" over the plastic shield (it takes the paint better that going straight on to the plastic) and just paint.

Apart from Sir Ulrich which went right first time, I usually strip them off and start again two or three times until I'm happy with them.

The handpainting makes the shields very authentic.
And again an interesting collection of medieval personalities.

@ geobra: Thanks a lot!!! :-)

Wonderful historical figure and a very nice interpretation by u!  ;D
I left my love a letter in the hollar of a tree.
I told her she would find me in the U.S. Cavalry.
High, yo, down they go, there's no such word as can't.
We'll ride clean down to hell and back for Ulysses Simpson Grant.

Gorgeous paintwork, especially on the William the Marshall shield, but wasn't Ulrich blond in the movie?

I've seen a TV Documentary on William the Marshall. When there were no major wars to go and fight in, there used to be massive tournaments with dozens of knights on each side fighting mock battles - far more exciting but also dangerous than the simple tilting with lances.

William (with a band of followers) used to seek out wealthy knights to capture and ransom, all in the rules of the tournament, and thus made a lot of money, and a great reputation, at "wargames".
"The game's a-klick, Watson!"
