Could be they got caught on straps, slings, etc.

that's certainly a very good reason! (never occurred to me...I'm an armchair enthusiast  :P
(btw Andy, have you ever been in a uniform with straps before?)

Don't know about winter buttons. French soldiers in Egypt (1800) had buttons covered with cloth, because metal buttons were used as "money".

very interesting, Ralf!
IMHO, Andy's experience is the most logical....any other theories?

have you seen 'hidden' buttons seen on any other uniforms?

There appear to be several reasons for hidden buttons, but the most logical reason seems to be that it prevents the buttons from getting "snagged"!  Click HERE (http://www.quanonline.com/military/military_reference/american/m43_jacket.html).

Hi Cheng

I'm former American army.

Our BDU (battle-dress-unifrom) coats had "hidden" buttons.  Like Richard says, to prevent snagging.  We did a lot of low crawling under barbed wire in training.
