Hi all,
Since the Egyptians are Playmobil's newest historical theme, and among their best creations in my opinion, I thought I'd ask what your Egyptian army is like or what it will be like when finished. How many klickies are in your army and what types are they? What are your subunits like in terms of numbers and equipment? Are you coordinating units by weapon and/or armor and/or headgear type or are you mixing and matching? What about the different colored accents on the armor? How about mounted and chariot units?
Personally, I don't yet own many Egyptians soldiers, but when they are released in the U.S. I plan to buy more. Knowing your choices and reasons might be helpful me and other collectors who have yet to form their armies. Thanks!

I have already collected one of each of the Egyptian theme.
I'm not sure if I'll buy many duplicates. There is, however, one figure that may be the exception.
The figure is somewhat expensive from Playmobil DS. Hopefully, it will become part of a Target "blister pack" next year.
The reason that I like it is because it reminds me of a Warhammer High Elf ... ;)
However, the old Roman figure also converts rather well.

Thanks for the response. I really like the Egyptian Pharaoh too, but he's gotten expensive. I really like your archer customs! I bought some of these guys in the blister packs and have turned them into some sort of infantry (Hittites? Palmyrenes?), but they make great archers too. I'll probably use them as enemies or allies of my Romans and Egyptians.

I really didn't answer your question in my first response.
IMHO. I think that the Romans lend themselves far better to creating an army than the Egyptians.
I really like the Egyptians, but for some reason, I just don't picture myself creating a large Egyptian army.

That's another nice custom.
I created a Roman army that is, in my opinion, too large, so I'm not going to go as big with my Egyptians. That said, it will exceed 100 men. I've kept my other ancient armies to 45 or so total men.

i've been dissapointed with the last few,better themes, egyptians look cool but the buildings are just to big and i don't really want any, they should have just redone the romans

I personally think Playmobil has done an excellent job with SOME of the Egyptian sets. The figures are superb as a whole with some nice variety. With the exception of not including a driver or a place for him to stand, which is a pretty big oversight in my opinion, the chariot looks good. I also think the pyramid looks pretty impressive, although I haven't seen any set in person so it might underwhelm me. The ship looks good to me also and the house is very useful for a variety of themes. That said, the sphinx looks too small and the temple needs more to it. Still, considering these are toys, I think Playmobil has done a good job with the theme.
I too wish they would have expanded the Roman theme. Green auxiliaries and light blue or black Praetorians would supplement the current red legionaries and auxiliaries and the Romans really need some buildings! A house, a temple, and a forum would have been great additions. I'd like to see the Gallic range expanded too with a British chariot and a hill fort complete with village.

I was buying Roman sets until Target and ToysRUS stopped carry them and I really don't have the funds right now to order them from DS. Here is what I have thus far:

That's a ton of klickies daHugh! Both you and Richard have VERY impressive Roman collections. My Romans consist of:
1 arena with add ons from DS so seating goes all the way around
1 partial arena from Target (bought on sale mainly for the 2 horse blue chariot)
1 blue chariot
1 green chariot
1 Target chariot
1 ship
1 tent
6 catapults (although I'm only using 2)
140 legionaries with 7 centurions, 7 signifiers, and 7 cornicens
140 blue Specials acting as Praetorians with 7 centurions, 7 signifiers, and 7 cornicens
40 auxiliary infantry with sandals (from DS) with 2 centurions, 2 signifiers, and 2 cornicens
40 archers (from DS) with 2 centurions, 2 signifiers, and 2 cornicens
20 Praetorian cavalry with 2 decurions
20 auxiliary cavalry with 2 decurions
10 customized marines with 1 centurion
miscellaneous staff officers, cornicens, vexillifers, senators, and gladiators
I also have about 45 of the Target centurion and legionary Specials blister packs that I'm customizing for use as enemies of Rome.
I'm still trying to decide what my Egyptian army will be like...

I kept to about 80 legionaries (four centuries), and just one "century" of 20 Blue Praetorians, but other than that my army is about the same size, Justindo. I agree, it's too large to work with, it more than filled the biggest table I have here in the UK, and now we're busy packing things away prior to our move to the US the army is boxed up, and probably won't be on parade again until next Summer.
The Egyptians having four different colour armours have suggested to me an army of 4 matching units, with maybe 15 footsoldiers and 5 archers in each colour, with some special units like Pharoah's guard. My problem again is that they're now packed away so I'm not sure exactly what I already have and what I'll need to add. I'll probably have to unbox some stuff to get a rough count, and make up the numbers through DS and spares orders before we leave the UK.
I've ordered an Egyptian Temple and Sphinx, and a couple of the 5 man army set, but am holdign off on the Pyramid until we are settled in the States.

Unless you want to buy it on eBay, you might want to think about buying your Pyramid sooner, rather than later. Because of the "recession", Geobra may accelerate their program for discontinuing the larger sets.
Speaking of the Egyptians ...
I was looking at my recently acquired collection. They're beautiful!
IMO, the Egyptian Lady in set 4243 is the best looking Playmobil female figure ever made.
In fact, I love all the figures in that set ... ;D
Again, in my opinion, the Egyptian theme is the best series that Playmobil has ever created!
(And, being a long time fan of Playmobil's Victorian theme, I never thought that Geobra would ever be able to create something even as good as their Belle Epoque!.)
But, as I said, that's just my opinion ... ;)

Thanks for the tip Richard - do you think they'll discontinue it within a year? The set was only released in the UK and US in July, so I'd expect it to still be available in the US until July 2010. I nearly got one at ARGOS because they were putting in an extra 4247 set for free, but shied away because we are trying to get stuff out of the house.

I doubt Playmobil will discontinue the Egyptians in a year. I think they'll have the same run as the Vikings and the Romans, which I think was about 3-4 years. Therefore I'd wait to get the bigger sets until you move to the US.
It would be nice if Playmobil would keep both the Romans and Egyptians around indefinitely in some capacity. They could add other Ancient cultures (e.g. Athenians, Spartans, Persians, Hittites, Parthians, Celts, Dacians, etc.) to it too to keep it fresh.

Too late, I got the Pyramid at Argos 'cos they were throwing in a free Robbers with Camels set, which made it very good value. Haven't assembled it yet.

That's a good deal, Martin! With all the Playmobil you have, I don't think the pyramid will significantly add to the weight or size of your boxed-up collection. ;)
I know you've now got the pyramid, temple, sphinx, camels, chariot(s), and troops, but do you have or intend to buy the ship or house? I think the latter is a little pricey, but very versatile.

I've been building up my Egyptian army up over the last couple months, but I still have a way to go. I've decided on having 40 soldiers in each company with one company of each of the following: heavy infantry (helmets, torso armor, shields, and spears), light infantry (shoulder armor and axes), archers (shoulder armor and bows and arrows), and cavalry (helmets, torso armor, shields, and spears). I may split the cavalry into two companies of 20 men each. Each company will have its own colored armor.
I currently only have one chariot for the pharaoh, but I'm wondering if I should add others. How many chariots are you all planning to have? Is anyone planning to have a chariot corps? That would be most impressive!

This beautiful painting by H.M.Herget, which appeared in the October 1941 issue of National Geographic, clearly shows that the Playmobil designers really did their research for the Egyptian theme.

You are indeed correct. Egyptian war chariots (Click HERE (http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/chariots.htm)) had a driver and an archer. However, it seems that the chariot Playmobil chose to depict was the personal chariot of young King Tut who appears to have chosen to ride alone.

BTW ... Playmobil has produced THREE Pharaoh crowns in their Egyptian theme.

The first two are the Blue War Crown and the Nemes which was more of a head covering that an actual crown.

The third crown represents the union of the upper and lower kingdoms.

Playmobil has indeed given us a great variety of authentic crowns. I'm using the Upper and Lower Egypt crown for my pharaoh, the war crown for my warrior prince, and the Nemes headdress for my head priest prince. I may, however, turn the latter into another warring prince and give him a chariot.

something like this right? (sorry...I know you guys have moved on and are discussing something else now ;D ) ...the chariot carrying 2 men doesn't look much bigger but I suppose our beloved klickies ocuppy more space..unless they can have 4 arms :P

Interestingly, Playmobil has changed a couple of their Egyptian chariot parts slightly. I originally purchased one chariot from Germany and had to apply stickers to the aqua side quiver myself. I just purchased two more chariots from the US and the aqua side quivers have the printing already applied. The aqua side quivers and the sticker sheet have new part numbers compared to the earlier version. I prefer the new printed version, as it is more vibrant and perfectly aligned.

Today I bought my first Egyptian sets. I bought one each of:
Set # 4244 Egyptian Chariot, and
Set # 4245 Egyptian Soldiers
These were bought at a local Toys R Us here in the Mid-west USA. I have not had time to
see the contents, but it looks like all the sets in the Egyptian theme are available there.
I was also surprised at the number of sets TRU had. I also think that among them are
all the sets for the 'ghostly' Pirates.
Oh, the pain... the pain... so many sets, so little funds.

Congratulations da Hugh on your first Egyptians!
While the Egyptian structures are quite nice, I prefer the klickies for play value and "bang for the buck" fun. A set of soldiers and the pharaoh's chariot are a great way to start your Egyptian collection or the two sets could stand on their own as a nice representation of the theme. Although huge armies are impressive, I've come to realize that one can have just as much fun with much smaller groups of men.
Toys 'R Us does have a great selection of Playmobil, although my local one never seems to have any Specials. I think they are having a 20% off Playmobil Egyptians sale starting today, so this may be a good time to add some sets you want while simultaneously easing the pain of the price.

I am aware that the timeline for the Roman sets are not in line with the Egyptian sets, but my Romans will go up against the Egyptians. Hee... Hee... it is my game. I am thinking that the Playmobil Romans & Egyptians are in the time of Cleopatra and Caesar, so I can have them battle each other
It may take two or three Egyptian galleys to go against my Roman galley... okay, I am having fun.
After all, it is just klicky verses klicky. But it will take a bit, as I have a couple of hundred Romans verses 6 Egyptians and only 1 Roman ship verses zero Egyptian.

Wow, da Hugh! A couple hundred Romans is a HUGE army! You will need a lot of Egyptians to do battle with them! ;) I agree that the Roman trireme would probably be victorious against the Egyptian ship, but two Egyptian ships against one Roman trireme would be an interesting battle.
I too will have Playmobil's Egyptians fighting my Romans, even though it isn't historically accurate.

Yesterday I bought my 1st Egyptian ship and another set of Egyptian soldiers, so my Egyptian army is up and growing.

What do you think of the Egyptian ship?
Overall I think Playmobil did a pretty good job, although I wish they had included some oars as that would have been more historically accurate. I also think the top of the mast looks unfinished so I added a blue flag to it, similar to the red flag on the Roman ship. More klickies would have been nice too. One thing I really don't like about it is the detachable bow and stern because I usually pick up the ships that way and they keep breaking off! >:(

I know that I've posted these two pictures before. However, I would just like to say that in more than thirty years of collecting Playmobil, IMHO, these are the two best figures that Playmobil has ever produced!
These two are definitely my two favourite Klickys of all time!
And, did I say that I absolutely love Playmobil's Egyptian theme? ... ;D
