Title: Playmo Swabby
Post by: Richard on July 03, 2008, 02:59:01 PM

This topic was originally created by Jimbo and posted over at Playmofriends (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2346.0).

It seemed appropriate to bring it over here for the Fourth of July ...

Ahoy Playmofriends, seafarers and landlubbers alike.

I have been "putting" around the last few days trying to
make a modern U.S. Sailor.

This is how the little salt turned out.

The base figure was the snowboarder.  I raised the inseam a bit and removed the
cargo pockets.  The collar/flap was made from the snowboarder's hood.  I
used a belt sander to remove anything that didn't look like a sailor collar, then fine tuned
it with jewelers files and sandpaper.  The necktie (with a regulation knot :yup:)
was made from thin ribbon, superglued for firmness, and painted black.

The sailor hat, (dixie cup) was made from card stock, and painted with Krylon
spray paint.  The uniform was also sprayed with the same stuff.

He is standing on a genuine piece of the deck from the Battleship USS North Carolina.
(Son in law and Daughter sent it to me when they moved to North Carolina.)

Oh yeah, the swab,(mop) was made from yarn and a Playmobil flag staff from an
old knight set.

Anchors Aweigh!
Jimbo

fantastic custom by Jimbo!
my respects!

(i'm still trying to customize a couple of sailors for Peking 1900 and am still figuring how to make their caps with those red pom-poms and their neckties with their flaps behind, all in one piece  ;D )

maybe i can borrow some of your ideas  :D

Hello, Cheng ...

I don't remember which set the dark blue neckerchiefs came from, but they're the same as the yellow neckerchiefs in the US cavalry set 3811

Playmobil finally made a neck flap that could be used for a sailor. For some unknown reason they put it on a Roman soldier (set 4273}

One of these days I plan on combining the neckerchief with the flap. Then I'll make a mould and cast all I want ... ;)

i wasnt hoping for any reply...it was just wishful thinking  :P

its also my saying not to reinvent the wheel  :D

so WWWWWOOOOHHHH! any idea how this customiser made these sailor cap?! the blue strip is a sticker for sure but i suppose he trimmed of the visors from those police caps which shouldnt be too painful to do...but i'm still quite reluctant to till now(altho you know, i've trimmed and cut as a last resort)  ;D (PM has a kids version of these sailor caps but i have not learn how to stretch them with any heating methods yet  :D )

yes..i recognise these blue neckties when collecting those chinese pirate (cant remember the set number)

and i do have these roman 'ancillary' men...guess i should look at their backs more often  ;) imagine wondering why i dont have them for a moment  :D

i think i'll have to customise these sailor lapels myself...just a couple..for french sailors ala Peking 1900...

thanks again Richard....i hope i dont get lazy doing researches because of you constant help  ;D

Now there's an idea!  The Royal Navy Museum in Portsmouth used to sell bits of HMS Victory.   If they still do, I have a fancy for a British sailor doing the same thing.

I have a small collection of bits of British battleships.  There used to be a firm who bought the deck teak when they were scrapped and turned them into wooden items with a little plaque saying what ship it had come from.  I've got match holders, letter openers, bookends etc.  The family refer to  them all as "The Grand Fleet".

Going back to Jimbo's figure, it would make a grand presentation piece to some old salt who'd served on the North Carolina.

It's really nice the way the Americans keep celebrating the British victory over the Zulus at Ulundi on 4th July 1879.

Well ... First of all, Cheng ... I'm the "customizer" ... :)
(If you click on the photos, you will go to the Garden Wargaming website.)

And, those ARE kids sailor caps from set 5402. (And, there was NO "stretching" required! The kids sailor caps fit perfectly on the adult Klickys.)

Thanks, Cheng ... for some unknown reason ... I just couldn't remember that it was set 3794, the Pirate Barbeque ... :-[

Great idea, Dan ...

I saw that you had also posted this suggestion over at Playmofriends, so Jimbo is sure to see it.

All the best,
Richard

Thanks for this bit of info, Dan ... ;)

It's really nice the way the Americans keep celebrating the British victory over the Zulus at Ulundi on 4th July 1879.

HAIL Richard!!!
my apologies and respect...
i used to assume you were the "customizer" for everything i saw in GW unless it said oherwise but i didnt want to make a wrong claim here (in case you weren't the 'maker')

there are some pages in GW that i dont see unless i follow your links...i dont know why  :P
maybe too many secret passages/hidden doors that need ninja skills to 'see'
or i'm just not IT savvy enough  ;D

and you had so many kids' sailor caps?!
you were already there and making all these customs while i was in my playmo diapers  :D
when i see your customs and then realise they have been 'invented' before..its really humbling  :P

now youre just sitting back and watching us reinvent the wheel again  :D
thanks always!

No apologies necessary, my friend.

That was done purposely for people who enjoy "snooping" around and "discovering" things ... ;)
And, I have been criticized many times for making the website too "difficult" to navigate ... :)

and you had so many kids' sailor caps?!

Still have, Cheng !

you were already there and making all these customs while i was in my playmo diapers  :D

That's because I'm old ...  ;D

when i see your customs and then realise they have been 'invented' before..its really humbling  :P

No need to be humble, Cheng ... You've created customs much better than anything that I ever did!

now youre just sitting back and watching us reinvent the wheel again  :D

I have to have SOME fun ...   :P

thanks always!

I don't know what I did ... but, you're always welcome ... :)

All the best my friend,
Richard
